Target recently announced plans to open 15 new stores across the country this year and, drumroll please, two of these TargetExpress newbies will soon open on the West Coast in the San Francisco Bay Area!

“The flavor of each TargetExpress store is different: Each is designed for the local community it serves,” said David Best, vice president, New Formats, Target. “We carefully curated the offerings of each San Francisco Bay Area TargetExpress store based on what we heard these guests want and need: relevant merchandise, local brands and store designs that reflect their neighborhood.”

The Bay Area isn’t new territory for Target – it opened its first general merchandise stores there in 1987! The addition of these two TargetExpress stores brings the total number of Target stores in the Bay Area to 58. Take a look at what the new, flexible formats have to offer.

TargetExpress, Downtown San Francisco
Based in San Francisco’s financial district, this TargetExpress store was built with the busy commuter in mind. Conveniently located on Bush Street (right near the Montgomery BART station), this store features:

  • A refined and modern décor style: cooler white-and-gray flooring and clean white walls reflect the sophisticated location.
  • Art commissioned from a local artist pair, Lab Partners, who live and work in San Francisco, and created custom pieces depicting images of the Ferry Building, cable cars and the Golden Gate Bridge, among other gems from the community.
  • Merchandise from local vendors, including:
  • Made to Matter products, like  YES TOOlly and Method — brands that are headquartered in San Francisco.
  • 479° popcorn, handmade in San Francisco with the highest quality ingredients.
  • Ghirardelli chocolate, based out of San Francisco since 1852.
  • Organic produce sourced from California whenever possible.
  • Hangar One vodka, 21st Amendment and Anchor Brewing craft beer and a selection of wines from Napa and Sonoma are all coming soon.
  • A large grab-and-go area with sandwiches, salads and breakfast items like yogurt and mid-day snacks, conveniently positioned at the front of the store near the Starbucks.

TargetExpress, Berkeley
Located on Shattuck Avenue, right near UC Berkeley’s campus this store features:

  • Art commissioned from local artist Eszter Clark, who lives and works in Berkeley and created custom pieces depicting images of Alice Waters’ Chez Panisse, the Lawrence Hall of Science’s whale sculpture (a favorite with kids in the area) and other popular sites.
  • An interior that mirrors the artful and eclectic campus neighborhood with a bolder décor strategy, including solid red floors and a sculptural red ceiling installation.
  • Made to Matter products, including grocery items from Annie’s, which is headquartered in Berkeley.
  • Peet’s, a heritage coffee retailer founded in Berkeley and known for its dark Arabica roasts.
  • UC Berkeley merchandise.

That’s not all! TargetExpress will continue to refine its offerings as it settles into each community, adjusting based on guest feedback.

Even more TargetExpress stores will be opening throughout 2015, from Chicago to the Washington, D.C. area. Stay tuned for updates!
